Anaheim United Methodist Church

Meet Our Staff

MJ Buist

I am excited to be part of the ministry of your church. I feel well connected already being mentored as a Diaconal Minister by your own Mary Hibbard and working with Rev. Dave Beadles when he was an Interim at First United Methodist of Orange. I served there as Minister of Family Ministries and Adult Education. I met Pastor James the year he was being ordained which was also the year I was being consecrated for Diaconal Ministry. Being the new kids on the “ministry" block, we became great comrades.

I was raised in Seattle. MJ stands for Merrijoy, a name I was given after my parents had four boys. I graduated from the University of Washington and received my Masters of Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. I am married to Don Buist and have two sons, John Nickolas, 22, born a year before I discovered John Wesley.  But I made up for it with my second son, Benjamin Wesley, 16. I am currently writing a Young Adult novel and belong to the California Writers’ Club of Orange County along with your own Barbara French.

I am a convert to Methodism, falling in love with John Wesley and his idea of servant leadership. When I discovered Diaconal Ministry, I found the ministry to which I was truly called, one whose purpose is bringing Christ’s love, service, and justice into the world.

In line with this I am excited about a new ministry which will further bond our church connection with our homebound members. On Communion Sunday, lay people from our church will go out in teams of two to bring communion to our homebound who desire it. More details will be coming soon but I would like to hear from you if you or a loved one would like to receive such a service or if you would like to be part of this lay ministry team.

Looking forward to serving along with you,
MJ Buist Diaconal Minister
