Our next meeting:
Wednesday, February 1, 2012 Speaker: Matthew DuPuy
Last March, Matt was part of a team of seven young men who participated in an annual 150 mile relay race from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea. After the race, the bunch of them toured through Jordan and Lebanon. They visited the temple at Petra, the tombs of Palmyra, a Palestinian Refugee camp and parts of Beirut.
After that, Matt and Jon toured Syria. From Syria, they traveled to Turkey and then to northern Iraq. Matt and Jon travelled to some remote villages in northern Iraq. One of their hosts was a Kurdish army officer who drove them up to an outpost on the lower slopes of Cheekha Dar, part of the Zagros mountain range. Cheekha Dar is the highest mountain in Iraq at 11,847 feet. Matt and Jonathan climbed up through rock and snow fields to the summit of Cheekha Dar. They were cited this year as becoming the first westerners to summit the mountain in the winter time.
Matt will be showing pictures of this March 2011 trip to the Middle East.
The monthly UMM dinner festivities begin at 6:30 with snacks and fellowship. Dinner is served at 7:00, with the program immediately following. Cost of the dinner is only $8.00 per person. You may reserve a seat by calling the church office, or see Mike McCune on the patio on Sundays.
