DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES
Elg (pronounced “Elj”) grew up in Los Angeles and began singing in the Children's Choir at
La Tijera United Methodist Church. He attended California State
University, Northridge and graduated with a degree in Music Education. He
went on to study music at Cincinnati Conservatory, USC, UCLA and Loyola
Marymount. Some of his greatest teachers were John Alexander, Elmer
Thomas, Robert Shaw, Donald Neuen, and Paul Salamunovich.
an educator, John taught Choral Music at Mission Viejo High School and also at and
Orange Coast College. As a Minister of Music, he served for 27 years at
Presbyterian Church of the Master.
John has conducted over 500 Hollywood studio sessions for orchestras and
choirs, and was Conductor of the orchestra for the Laguna Beach Pageant of the
Masters from 2009 - 2016.

United Methodist Church is hiring Staff Singers for its Chancel Choir
under the direction of conductor John Elg and organist Yoojung
Chung-Ji. We are currently auditioning sopranos, tenors, and basses.
commitments are Thursday evening from 7:30-9:00 and Sunday mornings 9
AM service and 10:30 service, with brief warm-up rehearsals before
each. Other services may include liturgical or concert commitments as
specified on the choir calendar.

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS for OUR TROOPS
It's that time again. Last year we filled 90 stockings for our
troops in Afghanistan. This year we will be sending stockings to Chaplains at
Kandahar and Bagram Air Bases to hand out as they see the need. The stockings
will be sent out in November but we need them back early so we can pack them
and get all of the paperwork processed.
Dates: Pick up/return stockings on the patio Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22,
All stockings are due back by Sunday, October 29.
You can fill a stocking or make a monetary donation to help with
buying supplies and to help defray the cost of postage ($17.35 a box).
We can also use Christmas cards signed by you that we can send the
Chaplains to hand out at both bases.
***We are also in need of our regular supplies (toiletries and
snack items) that will be sent out in October. Please look over our shopping
list and see if there is something could buy. Place these items in the trunk in
the Narthex or the Troop barrel in the fellowship hall. We will pack them on
Sunday, October 15 at 8:15 am before first service.

HALLOWEEN TRUNK or TREAT NEIGHBORHOOD EVENT

We are hosting our community to a family-friendly Halloween event filled with food, fun, furry friends, and lots of fabulous treats.
We are looking for volunteers to host games, the photo booth, the petting zoo, tickets.registration, decorate a vehicle trunk, set-up and take down. If you would like to help in other ways, we are accepting donations of candy, cakes, cookies, and cash.

ROSE PARADE 2018
We are returning to Pasadena for a Pancake Breakfast and Rose
Parade Viewing. The cost is $50 and includes bus transportation, pancake
breakfast, and curbside seating for the parade (these are church
folding?chairs). All proceeds (except cost of transportation) go to fundraising
efforts of Pasadena First UMC. Sign ups will start in November. A $20.00
deposit will hold your seat on the bus. Don’t miss this super fun event! ? See Jennifer Weyenberg, our Ministry Intern.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
GET PLUGGED IN!
A few months ago I shared about our District
Superintendent Mark Nakagawa’s words of wisdom that churches should create many
places for people to plug in. When someone takes the courageous step of visiting
our church, it’s always good to have one or more ideas for how they can get
So, it was exciting, several weeks ago, when our Youth Director,
Nicole Jackson pointed out to me, “James, AUMC now has a place for people of
every age group to plug-in!”
This is, in part, because Nicole has shifted her work with Young
Adults from Garden Grove UMC to our congregation as a result of budget cuts in
that church. Thankfully, AUMC is willing and able to provide a home for these
young adults who will meet weekly on Wednesday evening beginning in March.
Here is a current summary of our age-level fellowship and study
- Ages 0-12: Sunday School, VBS, Easter Eggs, Christmas Workshop
with Pastor MJ
- Ages 13-18: Sunday youth fellowship, retreats & service
projects with Nicole Jackson
- Ages 18-35: Young Adults: Weekly evening meetings with Nicole
- Ages 30-50: In Betweeners: Monthly fellowship activities with
Intern Jen Weyenberg
- Ages 50 +: Bible studies with Pastor James & MJ, Sunday School
with Mary Ann Jones
With this many outlets, AUMC can proudly say we not only welcome
people to visit, but to plug-in and stay. Thanks to everyone who has helped
make our ministries more complete and effective as we share Christ’s love with
Grace and Peace,
