Serving Opportunity: AIDS Foundation of Orange County

Description: Host dinners for persons/families living with HIV/AIDS, contribute to holiday baskets and support the “Strength for the Journey” camp.

Time Commitment: As little as 1 hour to as many hours as you would like to donate.

Serving Opportunity: Angel Tree

Description: Sponsor a low-income senior at Christmas by purchasing small items the senior has requested.

Time Commitment: 2 hours one time per year (early December)

Special Abilities: Hospitable spirit, willingness to serve.

Serving Opportunity: Brown Bag Packer

Description: Pack bags of food for low-income seniors in Anaheim.

Time Commitment: 2 hours, 2 times per month; 8:30 am, 1st and 3rd Fridays

Special Abilities: Ability to stand for a long period of time, interest in working with seniors.

Serving Opportunity: Childtime Volunteer

Description: Volunteer 1 day/week in the Childtime preschool reading stories to children or helping with homework.

Time Commitment: 1 ½ hours a week, M, T, W, 3:30-5:00 pm

Special Abilities: Ability and interest in working with children, consistent weekly presence, clear background check.

Serving Opportunity: Packing Food Boxes

Description: Pack food boxes for low-income/homeless individuals in Anaheim.

Time Commitment: 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Special Abilities: No special ability required.

Serving Opportunity: Delivering Food Boxes

Description: Deliver food boxes to Salvation Army and Downtown Community Center.

Time Commitment: 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, at your convenience during the recipient agency’s business hours (1 hour)

Special Abilities: Ability to carry 10 pound boxes, deliver with personal car.

Serving Opportunity: Halcyon Family Transitional Home

Description: Provide items requested during the year including food, furniture and dry goods. These items go to Halcyon, a local homeless shelter for families. AUMC sponsors two apartments during the year.

Time Commitment: As little as 1 hour per month to as much time as you would like to donate.

Special Abilities: Willingness to serve.

Serving Opportunity: Mississippi Rebuild

Description: Construction work on homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina in Waveland, Mississippi.

Time Commitment: One week (first week in April).

Special Abilities: Ability to travel to Mississippi, some basic construction skills, willingness to work in humid conditions, ability to do physical labor.

Serving Opportunity: Paint Your Heart Out

Description: Painting homes of low-income Anaheim residents.

Time Commitment: Two weekends (usually in March and April)

Special Abilities: Willingness to serve, some painting experience is a help, but not required, must be over age 14.

Serving Opportunity: Sandwich Making for the Homeless

Description: Volunteers make sandwiches at AUMC which are distributed to the homeless in Anaheim.

Time Commitment: First Monday of the month, 8:30 am – 10:00 am

Special Abilities: None required.

Serving Opportunity: Self-Help Interfaith Program (S.H.I.P)

Description: AUMC hosts homeless persons on the AUMC campus for a two-week period each year. Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles (food preparers, overnight hosts, daytime hosts)

Time Commitment: Depends on the task – there are opportunities for all schedules.

Special Abilities: Willingness to serve, hospitality, interest in serving the marginalized.

Serving Opportunity: Boxes for the Troops

Description: Collect donations for troops in Kuwait and Iraq, and help pack the boxes.

Time Commitment: As long as you can be there during the Connection Hour, Family Cafe – 3rd Sunday of the month, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Special Abilities: None required.

Serving Opportunity: Prayer Shawl Knitter/Crocheter

Description: Knit or crochet prayer shawls for the AUMC prayer shawl ministry. The shawls are given to people in the AUMC community and beyond who are dealing with loss, illness or other difficulty. Shawls are also given to newborn babies.

Time Commitment: You can make 1 shawl or 50 shawls – the number is up to you. Be present for a prayer with the shawl at 10:30 am the Sunday it is blessed.

Special Abilities: Ability to knit or crochet.

Serving Opportunity: Homebound Visitor

Description: Visit AUMC members who are homebound.

Time Commitment: Can be a one-time commitment, or as long as you can volunteer.

Special Abilities: Listening skills, people-person.
